How safe is tandem paragliding?

Experienced pilots, certified equipment and clear safety standards ensure a safe flying experience.

Paragliding is an unforgettable experience for many – and yet the same question almost always comes up: just how safe is a tandem paragliding flight? The short answer: very safe – provided it is carried out professionally.

At Paragliding Oberbayern, safety comes first. Every tandem flight is conducted by experienced, state-certified pilots who carefully analyse the flying conditions and regularly check the equipment.

So you can concentrate fully on your experience – we’ll take care of ensuring your paragliding flight runs safely.

Why tandem paragliding is considered particularly safe

A tandem paragliding flight is one of the safest ways to get to know this sport.

With tandem paragliding, you fly alongside an experienced pilot who controls the entire flight – from take-off to landing. You don’t need any prior experience.

Thanks to a combination of modern technology, clear safety standards and, above all, the constant flying experience of our experienced pilots, you are in safe hands.

Your pilot will explain everything to you in detail – just follow their instructions. We’ll take care of the rest!

Our Safety Promise

Safety is no accident, but the result of clear standards and experience.
When in doubt, we do not fly. This decision is an integral part of our safety philosophy.

More about your pilot

Weather & Experience – the key safety factor

The weather is the deciding factor in paragliding: the wind, thermals and visibility must all be right. Assessing these conditions correctly requires experience – and that is one of our greatest strengths.

Our pilots analyse the conditions daily and make clear decisions.

If it isn’t safe, we don’t fly.

Modern and certified equipment

For your tandem paragliding experience, we use only modern, certified equipment:

  • the latest paraglider models, meeting the most recent safety standards
  • Harnesses with integrated back protectors (airbags)
  • Emergency rescue parachutes
  • Aviation-approved helmets for all passengers
  • special harnesses for children

All equipment components are regularly inspected and serviced – in accordance with legal requirements.

Strict legal safety standards in Germany

Paragliding – particularly tandem paragliding – is subject to strict legal regulations in Germany.

  • The certification of paragliders and accessories is the responsibility of the Federal Aviation Authority and is carried out by accredited certification bodies
  • Regular checks on the functionality of paragliders and accessories carried out by independent testing bodies (inspection centres, similar to the TÜV)
  • Maintenance and inspection of equipment at fixed intervals
  • Repacking the rescue kit on a regular basis

We adhere strictly and meticulously to all legal regulations, ensuring a high level of safety during your tandem flight.

Insurance for your tandem flight

There are clear insurance requirements for tandem paragliding in Germany.

Our pilots hold the legally required passenger liability insurance, which is already included in the flight price.

This means that you are fully covered throughout your entire tandem flight and benefit from insurance cover in accordance with the legal requirements.

Who is a tandem paragliding flight suitable for?

A tandem flight is suitable for almost everyone.

You don’t need any experience – your pilot takes full control. You just need to be in reasonable physical shape to run a few steps at take-off. Before take-off, your pilot will give you a detailed briefing. During the paragliding flight, you’ll sit comfortably and safely in your harness and simply enjoy the ride.

If you’re feeling a little nervous before your first tandem paragliding flight – no problem. In the end, like all our guests, you’ll be standing at the landing site feeling completely relaxed with a big smile on your face.

Frequently asked questions about safety in tandem paragliding

Tandem paragliding is an outdoor sport – there is always a residual risk. However, thanks to experienced pilots, modern equipment and strict safety standards, a tandem flight is considered very safe.

If the weather is unsuitable on the scheduled date, the flight will be rescheduled – free of charge and with flexible options. Safety is always our top priority.

A fear of heights is not an issue in paragliding, as the typical triggers – such as having to maintain your balance on the edge of a cliff – are absent. You sit securely in your harness, which prevents the physical reflex associated with a fear of falling. Once in the air, there is no direct connection to the ground, so a fear of heights does not even arise. Most people find the height rather fascinating and liberating.

Yes, you are covered by the legally required passenger liability insurance.
